If you have found this page, that means you wish to delve further into how we do what we do, and I genuinely appreciate the initiative you’re currently taking! Enjoy our guide, and please message us if you have any questions, I will personally address them and will be more than happy to aid such an ambitious artist!
Beware! This is some serious nerd shit
This article is not for the faint of heart! If you aren’t a big reader, this guide may not be ideal for you. in which case, you should check out our condensed guide. However, this is our conclusive guide containing all the knowledge you could possibly need for basic art printing.
Different Kinds of Art
So when designing a shirt, it is very helpful to us when you have a contained graphic or image. Interesting shapes help to make a more appealing shirt. Now when reading this, please do not feel limited by these instructions, we do not want to limit your creativity. We will work with you to create something great, even if your particular style doesn’t adhere to these tips.
This painting, while stunning, is harder to work with
This image is more contained, and is easier to place on a shirt
See what we’re saying?
this is a very simple way of approving the likelihood of being approved by us to be on a shirt. There are still, however, still other ways of being approved. If your piece doesn’t fit that mould, don’t let us tell you to fit into it! If we think your artwork is absolutely phenominal, we will work to put it on a shirt.
Digitalization of work
in order to work with shirt printing, we need a digital file of your work. A lot of artists have very little knowledge of working with digital art. fortunately, we happen to know a lot about digitalizing artwork. There are still some things to consider when making artwork for T-shirts.
Higher contrast images work better. while nice, soft blended colors look very nice on canvas, they typically do not digitalize very well.
Both images shown here are photographed, and photoshopped. This means that the colors may be distorted from the original. Not to worry, when we edit photos like this we will always check in with you to ensure that you are happy with the final product.
We may put your work through our scanner to get a digital image and then recolor it on a computer.
Digital Art 101
While we do not expect you to know everything about computers, there are a few things you should know about computer graphics, and that is the difference between Vector and Bitmap graphics.
Bitmap graphics are images that are created using a large grid of pixels (1920 pixels by 1080 pixels for example). Each pixel is assigned a color, and together those pixels create an image.
Vector images are actually made with a bunch of lines and shades. Each line is drawn using a mathamatical equation (y=ax2+bx+c for example) and those lines then make up the design.
So why should you care?
So the big challenge with printing anything is making sure that the image printed is big enough. When we receive artwork, sometimes it is drawn very small. this is perfectly fine, as long as we can scale the image up to look good on a T-shirt.
When a bitmap image is scaled up, it loses quality very fast becuase the pixels just grow larger and blurier. A vector image, however, contains mathematical equations, and can simply increase the numbers in the formulae and redraw a bigger image. Basically, Vector images are better to use when printing becuase they look a lot nicer.
When we receive an image, our first step is to attempt to turn the artwork into a vector image so we can print a larger copy and make a better shirt. If you create your artwork following the guidelines above, it simply makes our job easier.
Just a reminder
If you don’t like our guide, don’t follow it! These are not rules, and we do not want to limit your creativity in any way. While following this guide is a good way to increase your chances of getting approved, if your art goes against these guides and looks amazing, we will work to help to put your passion on a shirt.
Don’t let us tell you what to do!
At the end of the day, just send us your art and we can talk about it. Don’t be scared by all this information, we will help you make something awesome.
